The Black salon experience

Is it just me or is there a glitch in the matrix? Ten years ago it was the norm to go into your neighborhood salon and and get your "hair did". If you wanted anything else beside what was on the pages of the hottest hair mag at that time, you went elsewhere. Its 2007 and lets face it our market has changed. African American's have become more aware and concerned about there health and appearance. Fitness, skin care, nail care, hair care are all things that were once considered taboo, have now become the rulewitin our communitites. So why does it seem that our salons located in our "hoods" have not yet opened up and began to offer those services that we so hated to practice while in school? I haven't seen one salon in my cities urban areas offer any spa services at all. What's even more upsetting is even with state board organizations cracking down on sanitation practices all over the nation, we still have stylist who aren't even sanitizing combs. I'm not concerned for those black salons located in the downtown areas, but for those located between the church and check cashing place I ask, "What the hell is up? Can the hood be made over?"

I think so and I think that the owners are going to have to make the changes. People are out looking for these services, so we need to provide them for people. We can do more than Hair and Cut hair, lets pamper our clients and make them feel welcome with other services to keep them coming back.

I agree we need more spa services and other services in our salons.
